M31 has an apparent magnitude of 3.4 and contains a mass of approx. 200-300 billion suns. Light from the galaxy began its journey to us during the Pleistocene epoch 2.2 million years ago. A mirror image of our own galaxy, this huge aggregation of stars, gas and dust spans 150,000 light years. Its neighboring satellite galaxies, M32 and M110, are visible as two bright objects in the picture.
